Lake Superior Shipwrecks
Map Illustration
This project was for a Digital Illustration course and focuses more on conceptual connections rather than pure wayfinding functionality. The map depicts a stylized kraken with tentacles reaching out to surround nine iconic ships that sank in Lake Superior, all working together to make up the shape of the lake. Focusing on tangents, geometric language, and an analogous color scheme of cyans and blues encourages the viewer to linger on the poster, and move in a little closer to continue searching for interesting or slightly hidden aspects.
Visual interest is achieved through the use of figure-ground reversal that makes up the kraken, which is the primary figure, and adds an additional level of story through interaction between it and the nine boats that make up the map. The function of this map lies more closely to a poster and is intended to be printed. The visual vocabulary used in this piece can be traced to contemporary illustrator Pablo Lobato in aspects like shared edge, points of tangent, and simplified forms.
